Total inbound tourists to Malta totalled 172,021 in January 2024, an increase of more than a quarter (26.3%) compared to the corresponding month the previous year, data from the country’s National Statistics Office has found.
A total of 159,807 inbound tourists visited Malta for holiday purposes during the month, while 8,030 tourists came for business purposes, the data showed.
Italian (29,832), British (28,527) and Polish (20,829) nationals accounted for close to half (46%) of the total inbound tourists in the month of January, ahead of Germans, French and Spanish visitors.
Just over a million (1,009,624) nights were spent by tourists in Malta in January, which was down 2.1% compared to January 2023.
Tourism expenditure
Total tourist expenditure reached €109.9 million, marking a 10.9% increase compared to the same month in 2023. On average, tourists spent €108.90 per night.
The majority of guest nights (79.4%) were spent in rented accommodation establishments, with the average length of stay for inbound tourists totalling 5.9 nights. Visitors aged between 25 and 44 accounted for the largest share of inbound tourists (40.1%), followed by those aged 45-64 (30.4%).
A total of 61,493 tourists visited Gozo (pictured) and Comino, including both same-day and overnight visitors, representing 35.7% of the total tourist influx.
