Number of passengers passing through Finland’s airports rose 7% last year

Some 19.8 million passengers passed through Finland‘s airports last year, a 7% increase on the previous year, new data from Statistics Finland has shown.

The number of domestic flight passengers was up 4%, while passenger numbers on international flights rose by 8%.

However, the number of passengers passing through the country’s airports was 25% lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the statistics body noted.

Helsinki leads the way

Helsinki Airport was by far the country’s busiest, accounting for 83% of all passengers in 2024, or a total of 16.4 million passengers.

Around 3.3 million passengers traveled through other domestic airports.

Overall, some 81% of passengers that passed through Finland’s airports took international flights – around 16 million – while 19%, or 3.8 million took domestic flights.

The share of international passengers at Helsinki Airport was even higher, at 89%, while other domestic airports saw a 44% share of international passengers.

Freight and mail transport

The total volume of freight and mail transported by air from Finland’s airports grew by 5% compared to 2023, with 184,303 tonnes transported in 2024.

Helsinki Airport handled 99% of air freight and mail, while of the freight transported, 53% was outgoing and 47% incoming, Statistics Finland noted.

‘The number of air traffic passengers increased by seven per cent from 2023. The number of passengers at Helsinki Airport was six per cent higher and the combined number of passengers at other domestic airports nine per cent higher than in 2023,’ Statistics Finland said. ‘Compared to 2019, the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport was 25 per cent lower and at other domestic airports combined 22 per cent lower in 2024.’ Read more here.
