Portuguese tourism reports a positive start to the year

Portugal's tourism industry reported 1.6 million visitors in January 2025, a 8.3% increase on the same month the previous year, new data from INE, the Portuguese statistics body, has found.

According to the INE data, overnight stays totalled 3.7 million in January, which is a 6.3% rise, year-on-year.

Total revenue generated by the tourism sector in Portugal totalled €262 million in January, which was a 13.8% rise. Revenue from tourist accommodation was up 14.2% to €188.9 million, meanwhile.

Domestic tourism increases

Domestic tourism showed significant growth, with overnight stays by Portuguese nationals increasing by 11.3% in January, a notable reversal of the 0.2% decline recorded in December 2024.

Non-resident overnight stays were up by 3.8% in the month, a slightly lower rate than the 4.4% increase observed in the previous month.

In terms of the markets from which international visitors came to Portugal, Poland recorded the highest growth in overnight stays, seeing a 16.6% increase, followed by the United Sates (10.3%).

Tourist numbers dropped significantly from France (-9.6%) and Brazil (-8.8%), meanwhile.

UK tourists

The UK continued to hold the largest share of overall international tourists, accounting for 14.6% of total non-resident overnight stays in January, according to the INE data.

This was followed by Germany (11.2% of the total), and Spain (8.4% of the total).

Lastly, revenue per available room (RevPAR) reached €33.2, representing a 10.0% increase. The average daily rate (ADR) was €89.3, reflecting a 7.3% rise, indicating an overall improvement in the financial performance of the sector. Read more here.
