Other countries to report an above-average inflation rate for the month included Bulgaria (6.0%) and Croatia (5.4%), while the lowest inflation rates were recorded in Sweden (0.5%), Denmark (1.2%) and Czechia (2.1%).

Compared with March 2026, annual inflation fell in five Member States, remained stable in one and rose in 21, Eurostat noted.

The view from Europe

Annual inflation across the euro area increased to 3.0% in April 2026, up from 2.6% in March. A year earlier, euro area inflation stood at 2.2%.

Across the wider European Union, meanwhile, annual inflation rose to 3.2% from 2.8% a month earlier, and compared to 2.4% a year earlier.

Sector by sector

Eurostat said services contributed 1.38 percentage points to overall euro area inflation in April, followed by energy at 0.99 percentage points. Food, alcohol and tobacco contributed 0.46 percentage points, while non-energy industrial goods added 0.20 percentage points.

Energy inflation accelerated sharply during the month, with prices up 10.8% year-on-year across the euro area, compared with a 5.1% increase in March. Services inflation eased slightly to 3.0%, while food, alcohol and tobacco inflation remained at 2.4%.

Month-on-month inflation in the euro area stood at 1.0% in April. Among individual countries, Cyprus recorded the highest monthly increase at 2.2%, while Sweden posted a monthly decline of 0.7%. Read more here.
