Strong start for Austria’s winter tourism season

Austria's 2024/25 winter tourism season got off to a strong start, Statistics Austria reported, with the number of nights spent in tourism accommodation establishments 6.7% higher in November 2024, compared to the previous year.

Austria‘s 2024/25 winter tourism season got off to a strong start, Statistics Austria reported, with the number of nights spent in tourism accommodation establishments 6.7% higher in November 2024, compared to the previous year.

A total of 5.52 million nights were spent in Austrian tourism accommodation establishments in November 2024, up from 5.18 million nights in the corresponding period a year earlier.

‘All-time high’

“The Austrian winter tourism season 2024/25 kicked off with an all-time high,” commented Statistics Austria director general Tobias Thomas. “A total of 5.52 million nights spent were recorded, marking the highest November value ever registered. Compared to November 2023, Vienna experienced a particular strong increase in nights spent with growth of 12.3%.”

In November, nights spent by international guests rose by 5.9% to 3.20 million, while domestic guests recorded a 7.8% increase, reaching 2.32 million.

Guest arrivals in Austrian accommodation establishments also grew, with a year-on-year increase of 7.9%, to 2.23 million.

Looking at the period from January to November 2024, meanwhile, nights spent in accommodation establishments totalled 141.64 million, a 1.2% increase on the previous year.

International guests accounted for 103.92 million nights, a 1.6% increase, while domestic guests contributed 37.72 million nights, reflecting a 0.8% rise.

December optimism

In order for Austria to reach the previous full-year total, an additional 10 million nights in accommodation establishments will need to be recorded in December 2024, a figure that is likely achievable, given that December 2023 recorded 11.41 million nights.

In full-year 2023, a total of 151.17 million nights were spent in Austrian tourism accommodation establishments.
