Swedish consumers eating slightly fewer hot dogs each year, study finds

Swedish consumers much through an average of 47 hot dogs each year, a slight decrease on the 49 recorded in both 2023 and 2022

Swedish consumers much through an average of 47 hot dogs each year, a slight decrease on the 49 recorded in both 2023 and 2022, a new study by Circle K has found.

The fuel retailer’s annual ‘Hot Dog Map’ survey shows that while the overall average is down, hot dogs are consumed more regularly by consumers.

Some 53% of Swedish men chow down on hot dogs ‘a couple of times a month’ according to the survey, up from 51% in 2023 and 52% in 2022. For women, meanwhile, 50% eat hot dogs ‘a couple of times a month’, up from 46% in 2023 and 45% in 2022.

Regional consumption trends

On a regional basis, the most hot dogs are consumed in Gävleborg, where residents consume an average of 56 hot dogs per year. This is followed by Norrbotten/Örebro, Kronoberg and Östergötland.

In terms of the favourite type of hot dog sausage consumed by Swedes, 43% cite chorizo sausage as their favourite, just ahead of barbecue sausages (42%).

“If there is something we at Circle K have in common with the Swedish people, it is that we appreciate sausages,” commented Erika Söderlund, communications manager at Circle K. “We cherish a high meat content, a wide range and Swedish ingredients and therefore we are extra proud of how many people choose to eat with us out at the stations. We feel secure in the fact that we actually have Sweden’s best hot dog menu to offer all sausage lovers.”

Hot dog preferences

The study also highlighted how hot dog preferences vary depending on car ownership. Opel drivers consume hot dogs most frequently, while Polestar drivers eat the most hot dogs annually, averaging 69 compared to the national average of 47. Tesla owners, on the other hand, are less likely to eat hot dogs, with 12% saying they never do. Elsewhere, diesel and electric vehicle drivers appear to consume more sausages than petrol and hybrid drivers.

Other findings show that mustard remains the most popular hot dog topping, followed by ketchup and roasted onions, and vegetarian hot dogs are gaining traction, particularly in the Gotland region.

The survey by conducted in Kantar Media’s web panel (Sifopanel) during the period 4–11 September 2024. A total of 3,081 people aged 16–79 were interviewed. Circle K operates 760 fuel stations across Sweden. Read more here.
