The Netherlands has placed second, behind the United States, in an assessment of the world’s top 10 most digitally-advanced nations, undertaken by Relum.
The study evaluated major economies around the world based on five factors, including business digitalisation, the volume of cashless payments, government websites and apps, public use of online civic platforms, and what percentage of residents are satisfied with their country’s tech services.
Each country received a score from 0 to 100, with the United States topping the list with a score of 99 – most US citizens and businesses can undertake both official and daily tasks digitally, the study noted.
The Netherlands ranked second, with a score of 96, with county scoring 74 for business digitalisation, 95 for e-government services and 93 for digital citizen participation. Close to two thirds (62%) of Dutch citizens reported positive experiences with online services, while annual digital payments per capita in the Netherlands average $7,100 (€6,085) the study found.
European countries to appear in the top ten include Norway and Sweden, in seventh and eighth respectively, which both earned an overall score of 67, and Denmark, in tenth, which achieved a score of 64.
Other countries in the top ten included China (3rd), Australia (4th), Singapore (5th) and New Zealand (9th).
Digital advancement
“Digital adoption isn’t only a Western thing anymore. Asia has caught up fast, with countries like China and Singapore now offering some of the most advanced tech,” commented Razvan-Lucian Haiduc, chief product officer at Relum.
“Still, we see that Northern Europe stays ahead of everyone when it comes to digitalisation. It’s not only about government services. People there are more tech-savvy across the board, even when it comes to entertainment. One of the recent studies even showed that Dutch and Danish residents put up to €1,500 a year into gaming and streaming services, which reflects how the digital world is part of everyday life there.”
