Tourism nights booked through online platforms rose 5.3% in Q2 2026

Some 258.8 million tourism nights in short-term rental accommodation in the EU were booked through online platforms in the second quarter of this year, a 5.3% increase on the same period a year ago, according to new data from Eurostat.

According to the data, which measured the total number of guest nights booked through online platforms including Airbnb, Booking and Expedia, the second quarter saw an increase of 13.1 million nights.

The figure was also 23.9% higher than in the second quarter of 2024, or around 50 million nights, Eurostat reported.

In the first half of 2026, tourism nights across the EU increased by 1.7%, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Most popular destinations

In terms of the first quarter of the year, meanwhile, Spain and France accounted for several of the most popular European destinations for tourism nights.

The Canary Islands in Spain and Rhône-Alpes in France each recorded 8.8 million nights spent in short-term rental accommodation booked through online platforms between January and March. Andalucia in Spain followed with 8.3 million nights.

Five of the 10 most popular regions during the first quarter were located in Spain, while three were in France and two were in Italy.

The regional figures are reported at NUTS 2 level, the statistical classification used by Eurostat for regional data across the EU. Read more here.
