Luxembourg reported a 13.1% increase in retail sales volumes in September 2024, compared to the same month the previous year, the biggest increase in the EU.
According to Eurostat data, of the member states for which data is available, other notable increases in retail trade volumes were recorded in Romania (+10.3%), Croatia (+7.1%), Portugal (5.2%), Bulgaria (4.8%) and Lithuania (4.8%).
At the other end of the scale, retail trade volumes were down in Estonia (-4.4%), Poland and Slovenia (both -3.0%) and Finland (-2.1%), among other countries. No data was available for Czechia, Greece, Italy and Sweden.
Retail sales volumes in EU
In September 2024, the calendar adjusted retail sales index increased by 2.8% in the European Union, compared with the same month the previous year. The retail sales index in the euro area was up 2.9%.
The volume of retail trade in the EU increased for food, drinks, tobacco by 0.4%; for non-food products (except automotive fuel) by 5.0%; and for automotive fuel in specialised stores by 1.6%.
On a month-on-month basis, the seasonally adjusted retail trade volume increased by 0.5% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU in September 2024.
The highest month-on-month increases in total retail trade volume were recorded in Belgium, Denmark, and Croatia (all +2.1%), Germany (+1.2%), Austria and Slovakia (both +1.1%). Read more here.
