Finland has the highest percentage of female representation in its national parliament, at 46%, followed by Sweden (44.8%) and Denmark (44.7%), new data from Eurostat has revealed.
The data, which was released ahead of International Women’s Day on 8 March, indicates that as of 2025, women held just over a third (33.6%) of the seats in national parliaments across the EU, a 5.4-percentage-point increase compared to 2015.
At the other end of the scale, the lowest female representation in national parliaments was found in Cyprus (14.3%), followed by Hungary (15.6%) and Romania (22.0%).
All EU member states have seen an increase in the share of female representatives in their parliament over the past ten years, with the exception of Germany (-3.5 percentage points), the data showed.
The biggest increases were recorded in Latvia (+19.0 percentage points), Malta (+14.8 percentage points), France (+10.9 percentage points) and Czechia (+10.6 percentage points).
The share of women in national governments has also increased over the decade, standing at 31.9% as of last year, a 4.2-percentage-point increase on 2015, according to Eurostat.
The share of women in government was highest in Finland (60.0%), followed by Sweden (50.0%) and France (48.6%). Hungary, meanwhile, had no women in its national government, with Romania (10.5%) and Czechia (11.8%) also boasting low percentages. Read more here.
