What EU country produced the most sparkling wine in 2023?

Italy produced the most sparkling wine in the European Union in 2023, with a total output of around 638 million litres, new data from Eurostat has found.

In second place, France produced a total of 312 million litres in 2023 (of which 224 million litres was champagne), with Germany producing 263 million litres, Spain 206 million litres and Portugal 25 million litres.

Other countries to produce sparkling wine include Hungary (13.9 million litres, Slovakia (4.2 million litres), Lithuania (3.5 million litres), Slovenia (1.8 million litres), Croatia (176,000 litres) and Bulgaria (51,000 litres).

Sparkling wine production in the EU

Overall, in 2023, total EU production of sparkling wine totalled 1.496 billion litres, down from 1.624 billion litres the previous year.

Exports of sparkling wine were down 8% compared to the previous year – exports to non-EU countries totalled 600 million litres, down from the 649 million litres exported the previous year. Despite this decline, export levels remained higher than those recorded in previous years (498 million litres in 2018, 528 million in 2019 and 495 million in 2020).

The largest export categories included Prosecco (44%, 266 million litres), sparkling wine from fresh grapes (17%, 100 million litres), champagne (15%, 91 million litres), and cava (10%, 60 million litres).

Imports of sparkling wine into the EU totalled 5 million litres, less than 1% of the export volume. Read more here.
