What EU country reported the biggest increase in retail sales in April 2025?

Cyprus reported the biggest annual increase in retail trade volumes in the EU in April 2025, with a 7.7% gain, new data from Eurostat has found.

Other countries to report a notable increase in retail sales, compared to the same month a year ago, included Estonia (+6.2%), Czechia (+5.8%), Sweden (+5.7%) and Poland (+5.5%).

At the other end of the scale, two countries reported a decline in retail sales in April 2025, compared to the previous year – Luxembourg (-3.6%) and Slovakia (-0.1%).

Retail trade volumes in the EU

At an EU level, seasonally adjusted retail trade volume grew by 2.3% in the euro area and by 2.8% in the EU, on an annual basis, while on a month-on-month basis (i.e. compared to March 2025), the euro area saw a 0.1% increase, and the EU was up 0.7%.

Looking at retail trade volumes by sector, on an annual basis, food, drinks, and tobacco increased by 2.2% in the euro area and 2.3% in the EU, Eurostat noted. Non-food products rose by 2.3% in the euro area and 2.9% in the EU, while automotive fuel was up 2.9% in the euro area and 3.9% in the EU.
