Cyprus reported the biggest seasonally-adjusted increase in retail sales in the EU in June 2025, with a gain of 8.7% in retail trade volumes, Eurostat has said.
Other countries to report an above-average increase in retail sales in the period included Croatia (+7.4%), and Malta (+6.9%), Portugal (+6.9%), Bulgaria (+6.8%) and Spain (+6.4%), according to Eurostat’s estimates.
Just two countries reported a decline in retail sales in June compared to the same period a year ago – Finland, which saw a 1.1% decline, and Slovakia, where retail sales fell by 0.4%. No data was available for Czechia and Greece.
Across the EU, on an annual basis, retail sales rose by 3.1% in June. In the euro area, the year-on-year growth also stood at 3.1%.
At EU level, food, drinks, and tobacco sales increased by 1.5%, non-food products by 4.4%, and automotive fuel sales by 4.6%. Within the euro area, growth for food, drinks, and tobacco stood at 1.7%, with non-food rising by 4.3% and automotive fuel up 4.0%.
Retail trade volume in both the euro area and the EU experienced a modest month-on-month increase in retail sales, of 0.3%, compared with May 2025, according to Eurostat’s first estimates. This follows a decline in retail trade volume in May, which fell by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU.
Croatia recorded the highest monthly increase in total retail trade volume (+3.6%), followed by Sweden (+2.6%) and Malta (+2.2%). France experienced the largest monthly decrease, of 0.9%. Read more here.
