What EU country reported the biggest increase in retail trade volumes in July 2025?

The volume of retail trade rose by 2.4% in the EU and 2.2% in the euro area, on an annual basis, in July 2025, new data from Eurostat has found, with several countries reporting a notable annual increase.

Cyprus reported a 8.5% annual increase in retail trade volumes in the period, the data showed, with Portugal (+6.1%), Bulgaria (+6.0%), Lithuania (+5.1%), Romania (+4.8%) and Malta (+4.7%) also showing notable gains.

At the other end of the scale, Slovakia was the only country to report a decline in annual retail trade volumes (-0.7%), while marginal gains were reported in Finland (+0.1%), Slovakia (+0.1%) and Austria (+0.4%).

Retail categories

Looking at the performance of core retail categories, the volume of retail trade increased in July (on an annual basis) for food, drinks and tobacco, by 0.7%. Elsewhere, volumes also increased for non-food products (except automotive fuel) by 3.3%, and increased for automotive fuel in specialised stores by 3.3%.

As Eurostat reported, on a month-on-month basis, i.e July 2025 compared to June 2025, retail trade volumes decreased by 0.4% in the EU and by 0.5% in the euro area.
