Malta recorded the biggest increase in tourism nights booked through online platforms such as Airbnb, Booking, Expedia or TripAdvisor in the EU in June 2024, registering a 45.8% increase, year on year.
Other countries to see a notable increase in online bookings include Lithuania (+28.1%) and Sweden (+27.4%).
More modest increases were recorded in Belgium (+2.6%), the Netherlands (+3.3%) and Slovenia (+6.0%).
Overall numbers for June
Overall, some 82.3 million nights were booked across the EU using online platforms in June 2024, a 17.8% increase compared to the previous year, the Eurostat data showed.
During the second quarter as a whole, meanwhile, some 208.8 million nights were booked, a 16.2% increase on the same period in 2023.
France records the most bookings
France recorded the highest number of travel and tourism bookings using online platforms in June 2024, with some 15.5 million bookings recorded, ahead of Spain (15.3 million) and Italy (13.7 million).
Greece, in fourth place, is some way behind, with just over 6 million bookings, while Germany ranks fifth with just under 6 million bookings. At the opposite end of the spectrum, just 46,000 bookings were recorded in Luxembourg using online platforms. Read more here.
