Lisbon has been named the most popular capital city in Europe for wedding proposals, ahead of London and Paris, a new study has found.
The study, conducted by travel firm Paris Tickets & Tours, analysed the total number of proposal-related hashtags on Instagram, such as #[city]proposal and #[city]engagement, for each European capital. The rankings were then determined based on the capitals with the highest volumes of these hashtags.
Love in Lisbon
The Portuguese capital garnered a total of 1,049,944 proposal-related hashtags, with the city’s Portas do Sol viewpoint and Belém Tower and Gardens among the most popular Lisbon locations to pop the question.
In second place, London boasted 1,026,528 proposal-related hashtags, while Paris – a city renowned for its romance – placed third, with 1,011,970 proposal-related hashtags.
Berlin secured fourth spot with 549,300 hashtags, while Andorra La Vella was fifth with 358,409 hashtags.
Vienna, with 318,054 hashtags, took sixth position, while Madrid followed closely behind in seventh place with 248,426 hashtags. Amsterdam claimed eighth with 189,113 hashtags, while Oslo and Warsaw rounded out the top 10 with 146,535 and 105,516 hashtags, respectively.
Romantic experience
“Proposing abroad has always been such a romantic and sought-after experience, which is why it’s so fascinating to observe which European capitals are the most popular for popping that all-important question,” commented Magdalena Petrusic, travel expert at Paris Tickets & Tours.
“While it’s surprising that Paris does not top the list, given the capital’s well-known association with romance, this study demonstrates how social media trends can influence a ranking. It will be interesting to see how these capitals place on this list in a few years’ time.”
