Households in the Netherlands now pay an average of €2,065 for energy annually, which is a 2% decline on last year, new data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has found.
According to the data, which dates from January 2025, the year-on-year decline in household energy bills totalled €43, with the reduction driven by lower variable energy rates and a slight decline in projected electricity consumption.
Gas consumption is expected to rise in 2025, Statistics Netherlands added.
Energy bill components
Not all components of energy bills have decreased, according to the data, with transport-related costs – those linked to delivering electricity and gas – rising by €66 annually, a 10% increase.
Elsewhere, fixed supply charges for electricity and gas also climbed, rising €16 and €11, respectively.
‘The calculations shown here do not take into account the charges that are sometimes payable by households in order to supply self-generated electricity back to the grid,’ Statistics Netherlands noted. ‘Since the end of 2023, households that supply electricity back to the grid have increasingly been charged by their energy company to do this.’
From household to household
The statistics body also noted that energy bills ‘vary widely’ between households, based on factors such as the size of the dwelling, the type of installations present, and the method chosen by homeowners to heat their homes.
As an example, a large, older detached home using gas heating can expect an annual energy bill of about €3,520, while a single-person household in a smaller, newer apartment might pay just €1,380.
Homes that are heated primarily by electricity have the lowest average bills at €1,030 per year, though this group varies widely depending on the type of installations.
‘Many of these homes have heat pumps, generate plenty of electricity using solar panels and use no natural gas at all,’ Statistics Netherlands said. ‘However, the group also includes homes that still use natural gas for cooking or supplemental heating, for example, or which do not generate their own electricity. For this reason, the variation in the amounts spent on energy bills in this group is very widely.’ Read more here.
