The household savings rate in the euro area remained stable in the first quarter of 2026, at 14.3% – the same level as in the previous quarter, according to new data from Eurostat.
As Eurostat noted, the stable savings rate reflects a similar pace of growth in both household consumption and gross disposable income. Individual consumption expenditure increased by 0.8% over the quarter, while gross disposable income rose by 0.7%.
Household investment, however, edged lower, with the household investment rate falling from 8.6% to 8.5% as gross fixed capital formation, which mainly reflects spending on the purchase and renovation of homes, declined by 0.5% during the quarter. Gross disposable income continued to increase, by 0.7%.
Business profitability
Eurostat’s data also indicates a decline in business profitability across the euro area. The profit share of non-financial corporations fell from 39.7% in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 38.6% in the first quarter of 2026.
According to the data service, this was driven by a 0.9% decline in gross value added alongside a 0.8% increase in employee compensation and taxes less subsidies on production.
The business investment rate for non-financial corporations rose from 21.7% to 22.2%, meanwhile, as gross fixed capital formation increased by 1.6%, even as gross value added declined. Read more here.
