More than 3 million Germans working in the retail industry

Some 3.1 million German citizens are currently employed in the country’s retail sector, with the sector remaining a ‘powerful employer even in times of crisis’, according to representative group Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE).

The average hourly wage of a worker in the German retail sector in 2023 was €21.25, with senior managers on an average wage of €34.38 per hour, and those at entry level on a wage of €15.51 per hour.

“These are remarkable figures,” commented Steven Haarke, HDE managing director for Work, Education, Social and Collective Bargaining Policy. “The employment and wage statistics clearly show how efficient employers in the retail sector.”

Part-time workers

Part-time work is prevalent in the retail sector, with about 62% of employees working part-time, HDE noted.

This job flexibility, enabled by the extended store hours and peak times typical in retail, is particularly beneficial for those balancing work with family responsibilities, such as caring for children or relatives, the group said.

Women in management roles

The sector also stands out for its high representation of women in management positions. In retail, women hold 38% of top-level management roles, significantly higher than the 28% average across all sectors of the economy. At the second management level, the proportion of women rises to 58%, well above the overall economic average of 41%.

However, there is a call for policymakers to further support the compatibility of family and career by ensuring that childcare is available on all working days, including Saturdays and evenings.

“Retail offers women excellent career opportunities. Politicians are now called upon to continue to resolutely promote the compatibility of family and career,” Haarke added.
