The total number of new car registrations in Austria stood at 213,004 in the period from January to October 2024, a 5.6% increase on the previous year, new data from Statistics Austria has found.

In October alone, some 22,000 new cars were registered in Austria, a 15.6% increase on the same month the previous year.

Driving growth

“Growth was driven by registrations by enterprises, regional authorities and legal entities, which accounted for more than two-thirds of all new car registrations between January and October, driving the domestic new car market up by 4.8%,” commented Statistics Austria director general Tobias Thomas. “Private registrations rose by 7.2% in the same period, but only accounted for around a third of all new car registrations.”

According to the data, growth was largely driven by petrol and petrol-hybrid vehicle registrations – between January and October, there were 71,199 new petrol-powered cars registered in Austria, a 8.5% increase on the previous year.

There were 54,810 petrol-hybrid car registrations, meanwhile, an increase of 9,776 on the previous year, or 21.7% higher.

At the same time, there were 2,560 fewer electric vehicles registered in the first ten months of this year, compared to the corresponding period last year, a decline of 6.7%.

Performance of top car brands

Over the ten month period, VW (14.6%), Skoda (10.0%) and BMW (7.5%) accounted for the highest shares of all newly registered passenger cars, while registrations were also up for Dacia (+13.5%), Toyota (+9.9%), BMW (+9.6%), VW (+9.1%), Seat (+7.3%), Skoda (+6.6%) and Mercedes (+0.4%).

On the other hand, there were fewer new registrations for Tesla (−10.7%), Hyundai (−5.5%) and Audi (−1.4%), the data showed.

The increase in October registrations was largely driven by hybrid vehicles, especially petrol-hybrids, which saw a 51.9% jump. Conversely, electric car registrations in October declined by 8.9%, Statistics Austria noted. Read more here.
