Sweden boasts the highest share of renewable energy to power its transport network, with more than a third (33.7%) of transport powered by renewables, new data from Eurostat has found.
Other European countries to report a high share of renewables in use in their transport sector include Finland, (20.7%), the Netherlands (13.4%), Austria (13.2%), Belgium (12.1%), Spain (12%) and Germany (11.9%).
The lowest shares, meanwhile, were reported in Croatia (0.9%), Latvia (1.4%), and Greece (3.9%).
Overall, across the EU, the share of renewable energy in the transport network stood at 10.8% in 2023, which is 1.2 percentage points higher than the previous year.
Renewable energy target
However, this share is well below the 29% target for renewable energy in transport by 2030, which has been set out by the European Union.
‘Meeting the target would require an annual average increase of 2.6 percentage points between 2024 and 2030,’ Eurostat noted. ‘The average annual increase registered over the years 2014 to 2023 was 0.43 percentage points.’
On a year-on-year basis, the largest increases in renewable energy use in transport between 2022 and 2023 were seen in Sweden, which rose by 4.9 percentage points, as well as Austria and Portugal, both of which recorded a 2.5 percentage point increase.
At the same time, Latvia saw the most significant decline, dropping by 1.7 percentage points, while Croatia fell by 1.5 percentage points, and Romania by 0.9 percentage points,. Read more here.
