Number of bankruptcies in Luxembourg ‘stable’ in first quarter

The number of bankruptcies in Luxembourg remained stable in the first quarter of 2025, new data from the country’s Ministry of Justice and Statec has found.

Some 301 bankruptcies were reported in the quarter, compared to 300 in the corresponding period in 2024.

Bankruptcies by sector

While the construction sector has been the hardest hit by bankruptcies since 2023, this quarter saw the situation ‘ease significantly’, with 50 bankruptcies reported, 15 fewer than in 2024. The construction sector also saw a 43% decrease in potential salaried job losses, the data showed.

Elsewhere, the trade sector reported 37 bankruptcies in the first quarter of 2025, which was down 21%, while potential salaried job losses were down 55%.

At the same time, however, the HoReCa sector reported a 31% increase in bankruptcies, with 38 reported in the first quarter of 2025, although estimates of job losses in this sector decreased by 22%.

Liquidations increase

Liquidations rose by 55% in the first quarter of 2025, the data showed, but this increase follows a historically low level of liquidations in the first quarter of 2024. About 45% of the companies liquidated during this period were holding companies and investment funds.

‘The number of bankruptcies is calculated as the sum of ‘openings’ or ‘reopenings’ minus the bankruptcies reported from the judicial procedure ‘judgments and rulings declaring bankruptcy’. These figures are provisional,’ Statec, Luxembourg’s statistics portal, noted. Read more here.
