Luxembourg residents took a record number of leisure trips in 2025

Residents of Luxembourg made a record number of leisure trips in 2025, at 5.2 trips per resident, data from STATEC, the country’s statistics office, has shown.

The number of trips taken per resident was the highest recorded since the survey began, STATEC added. In total, around 2.9 million leisure trips were made by approximately 470,000 travellers.

Despite rising travel costs, participation remained high, with 82.9% of residents taking at least one overnight leisure trip during 2025, broadly unchanged from the previous year.

The average cost of a leisure trip reached €1,304 per person, setting a new record. Higher transport and accommodation costs were the main contributors to the increase, with travellers spending an average of €349 on transport and €478 on accommodation per trip.

‘Leisure tourism is thus continuing to grow in importance in residents’ habits, despite an increase in expenditure,’ STATEC noted. ‘With an average cost of €1,304 per trip, expenditure has reached its highest level ever recorded. The main changes relate to the continued rise in expenditure and the gradual shortening of stays.’

The average cost of accommodation rose to almost €192 per night, up from €179 in 2024. Overall, Luxembourg residents spent nearly €3.8 billion on leisure travel during the year, the highest annual total recorded by the survey.

Travel destinations

France remained the most popular destination, accounting for 20.2% of all leisure trips. Germany ranked second with 12.1%, followed by Portugal (8.1%), Italy (8.0%) and Spain (7.5%).

Europe continued to dominate travel choices, accounting for 92.4% of all holidays taken by Luxembourg residents.

Given Luxembourg’s proximity to other countries, the car was the most commonly used mode of transport, accounting for 50.6% of trips, while air travel represented 37.5%.

The survey also found that shorter holidays continued to gain popularity, although one-week breaks remained the most common type of trip. The average length of stay fell to 6.8 nights, down from 7.2 nights in 2024, continuing a gradual trend towards shorter holidays.

Elsewhere, business travel continued to lag behind pre-pandemic levels. Only 16.3% of employed residents undertook at least one overnight business trip in 2025, compared with 25.5% in 2024. The total number of business trips also declined, from approximately 454,000 to 421,000. Read more here.
